Cyclone Dana is gearing up to impact the Odisha and West Bengal coasts. It is expected to convert into a depression by the morning of October 22 and will likely develop into a cyclonic storm by October 23. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), it is anticipated that the cyclone will approach the Odisha-West Bengal coast by the morning of October 24.
IMD’s report suggests that the cyclone will make landfall between Puri and Sagar Island during the night of October 24 and early morning of October 25. Wind speeds could reach 100-110 km/h, with gusts up to 120 km/h during this time.
Fishermen have been advised to return to shore by Monday evening and to avoid venturing into the sea until October 26. IMD’s Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra indicated that Odisha is likely to face the most significant impact, with heavy to very heavy rainfall and high winds.
Rainfall predictions include light to moderate rain in most areas on October 23, with extremely heavy rainfall expected on October 24-25. The IMD has issued a red warning for several districts, including Puri, Khurda, Ganjam, and Jagatsinghpur.
Beginning October 23 evening, squally winds of 40-50 km/h, gusting up to 60 km/h, are anticipated along the Odisha coast. From the night of October 24 to the morning of October 25, wind speeds are expected to intensify to 100-110 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 120 km/h.
The Odisha government has placed district collectors on high alert, directing them to implement precautionary measures, including the evacuation of people from vulnerable areas.
