UP Man Converts Woman, Gives Triple Talaq: Case Filed

#image_title

A shocking incident has surfaced in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, where a Muslim man allegedly deceived a Hindu woman, forced her to convert, and later divorced her by uttering “talaq” three times. The accused, identified as Taj Mohammad, introduced himself as “Bablu” and started a relationship with the woman, eventually leading to their elopement.

The woman, a member of a Brahmin family, was initially unaware of Taj’s true identity. When she discovered the truth, she objected, but Taj allegedly assaulted her and forced her to convert to Islam, subsequently marrying her according to Islamic rites. Despite being misled, the woman continued to live with Taj and soon became pregnant. To support herself, she worked as a laborer under the Rajiv Gandhi Women’s Development Project. Taj, however, used her savings to travel abroad, specifically to Saudi Arabia, and gradually distanced himself from her.

Things took a darker turn when the woman found out that Taj had married another woman named Sazia, who resides in Gosai Ganj, Lucknow. Upon confrontation, Taj reportedly began abusing her physically and mentally, eventually throwing her out of the house. Left with no choice, she went to live with her brother.

One day, Taj allegedly came to her brother’s house, created a commotion, and divorced her by saying “talaq” three times. Distressed, the woman approached the police to file a complaint. According to Station House Officer (SHO) Anuj Tiwari, the police have registered a case under Sections 3 and 4 of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, and Sections 3 and 5(1) of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are determined to ensure justice for the victim.

The case highlights the challenges faced by women in such situations, where deception, abuse, and unlawful conversion practices are often used to exploit vulnerable individuals. The UP government has enacted strict laws against unlawful religious conversions, aiming to protect individuals, especially women, from being coerced into changing their religion under false pretenses.

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, commonly known as the Triple Talaq Act, was specifically designed to safeguard Muslim women from instant divorce practices. This case serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and strict enforcement of such laws to prevent exploitation.

The woman’s brave decision to stand against the abuse and seek legal redress reflects the growing awareness and resilience among victims of such crimes. As the investigation continues, it remains crucial to uphold the legal framework that protects individuals from such grave injustices.
