Malayalam actor Mohanlal made his first public appearance today, August 31, after resigning as the President of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). He finally broke his silence on the Hema Committee Report, urging not to focus solely on AMMA and not to destroy the Malayalam film industry amid ongoing investigations. Mohanlal’s response comes after allegations of sexual harassment against women in the Malayalam film industry, as highlighted by the report.
In his statement, Mohanlal emphasized, “We request you not to put all the focus on AMMA. Investigation is going on. Please don’t destroy the industry.” His remarks highlight the ongoing investigation into the issues raised by the Hema Committee, urging for justice without harming the broader industry.
Mohanlal resigned from AMMA on August 27, taking moral responsibility for the allegations against some of its governing body members. He stressed that the Hema Committee report was a step in the right direction by the government, stating, “AMMA cannot answer all the questions. These questions should be asked from everyone. This is a very hardworking industry, and those responsible will be punished.”
He further assured the public that all issues are being actively investigated, and the industry is committed to cooperating fully with the authorities. Mohanlal, who has not read the report, also distanced himself from any alleged power group, reiterating his intent to support the inquiry process.
The Hema Committee’s findings have triggered widespread outrage, prompting many celebrities to speak out about their own experiences with harassment in the industry. Mohanlal’s candid comments highlight the broader accountability needed in the industry while advocating for fair investigations.
Following his resignation, the entire governing body of AMMA stepped down. The association expressed hope for new leadership and announced plans for a general body meeting to elect a new governing body within two months.
