Aakhir Tak – In Depth
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday warned citizens about a rising cyber fraud called “digital arrest,” where scammers pose as law enforcement, threatening victims with arrest unless a specific amount is paid. During his ‘Mann ki Baat’ address, Modi stressed that “digital arrest” is not legally recognized and is merely a deception crafted by fraudsters targeting people’s fear of authority. He emphasized that the central and state governments are working jointly to counter such scams.
PM Modi introduced a three-step method to handle these scams:
- Wait – Upon receiving such a call, remain calm and avoid panicking. Do not share personal information. If possible, take a screenshot or record the call.
- Think – Government agencies do not threaten over the phone or video call. Recognize this as a scam if you feel scared.
- Take Action – Call the National Cyber Helpline at 1930, report the scam on the official portal, and inform family and the police. Modi also highlighted that a National Cyber Coordination Centre is set up to coordinate agencies in handling these scams.
