RG Kar ex-principal Faces Death Penalty Accusations

Kolkata Court Raps CBI: RG Kar Rape Case

A designated CBI court has denied bail to Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The court stated that the gravity of the accusations against him is significant, and if proven, it could lead to capital punishment. The CBI arrested Ghosh and former officer in charge of the Tala police station, Abhijit Mondal, for alleged evidence tampering and delays in filing an FIR related to the rape and murder of a doctor.

In its order dictated on September 25, the court remarked that the investigation by the central probe agency is in full swing. While denying Ghosh’s bail application, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate S. Dey noted that the nature and severity of the accusations are grave enough to warrant the possibility of the death penalty in rare cases.

The judge expressed that releasing the accused on bail would be a violation of the principle of equity. He further explained that an individual could commit an offense with the help of others, and it is not necessary for all accused to be present at the crime scene.

The court also rejected Abhijit Mondal’s bail application and granted the CBI’s request for judicial custody of both accused until September 30. Ghosh’s counsel argued in the Sealdah Court that he was falsely implicated in the case and did not commit any acts as alleged.

The body of the postgraduate trainee was discovered with severe injuries in the seminar hall of the RG Kar hospital.
