Nasrallah Temporarily Buried: Public Funeral Preparations Underway
Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in an Israeli strike on September 27, has been temporarily buried in a secret location as preparations for a public funeral are ongoing. Sources close to the matter informed AFP, stating, “Hassan Nasrallah has been temporarily buried until the circumstances allow for a public funeral.”
Hezbollah has yet to announce plans for Nasrallah’s funeral. Conflicting reports suggest that his final resting place could be in either Lebanon or Iraq. Abdul Amir Al Teiban, an adviser to Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al Sudani, tweeted that Nasrallah would be buried “next to Imam Hussein, in Karbala,” a location of great significance for the Shia Muslim community.
A Lebanese official who spoke to AFP noted that Hezbollah sought “guarantees” from American leaders through Lebanese intermediaries to organize a mass funeral for their slain leader. However, in light of ongoing Israeli raids in the southern suburbs of Beirut, no such guarantees were secured.
Meanwhile, a symbolic funeral for Nasrallah is expected to be held on Friday, under the leadership of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Khamenei delivered a rare Friday sermon in Tehran, expressing mourning for Nasrallah’s death. Thousands of Iranians gathered in the capital, displaying a photograph of Khamenei alongside an image of Nasrallah on the main stage.
Nasrallah, the 64-year-old leader who led the Iran-backed terrorist group for over three decades, was killed in a massive Israeli airstrike targeting the group’s central headquarters in Beirut. Reports indicated that 80 tons of bunker-busting bombs were used to strike the bunker where Nasrallah and senior Hezbollah leaders were meeting. The explosions breached the bunker, releasing toxic fumes that ultimately led to Nasrallah’s death, possibly due to asphyxiation. His body showed no visible external injuries, suggesting he may have suffocated in the toxic environment created by the blast.
