Mamata Banerjee Assures Justice During Doctors’ Protest Visit
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made a surprise visit to the site where junior doctors from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have been protesting over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor. Banerjee assured the protesting doctors that their demands would be looked into, urging them to end their protest and return to work.
Addressing the protestors, Banerjee stated that she had been losing sleep over the ongoing agitation. “I have come to you not as the Chief Minister, but as your elder sister,” she said, asking the doctors to resume their duties while ensuring justice would be served.
Drawing a comparison with BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh, Banerjee promised that no harsh measures like the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) would be implemented in Bengal. She emphasized her support for democratic movements, noting that she herself had emerged from student protests.
The protesting doctors welcomed her visit but maintained that they would not back down from their demands until a transparent discussion was held. They expressed their willingness to engage in talks with proper representation but emphasized that they would continue protesting until all their concerns were addressed.
