Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder: Principal Resigns Amid Ongoing Strike
The principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandeep Ghosh, has resigned following a week of intense protests over the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor. This incident has sparked a major strike involving junior doctors, interns, and postgraduate students, disrupting medical services at one of Kolkata’s prominent hospitals.
The body of the young woman was discovered in a seminar hall at the college on August 9. The autopsy revealed that she had been raped before her murder. The suspect, identified as a civic volunteer, was arrested on August 10 and is currently in 14-day police custody.
Ongoing Protests
The protests, which have now extended into their fourth day, have led to the closure of outdoor services at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The striking medical staff are demanding a magisterial inquiry into the incident and have been vocal about the need for justice. They are also calling for improved security measures to protect medical personnel.
As of Monday morning, even emergency duties have been halted by the protesting doctors. This has caused significant disruption, affecting patients who rely on the hospital’s services. The situation remains tense as the strike continues.
Investigation Developments
Kolkata Police’s detective department is scheduled to question several individuals in connection with the case. Among those to be interrogated are an intern doctor, two first-year postgraduate students from the chest medicine department, and a housekeeping staff member. These individuals were on duty the night the victim’s body was found and are reported to have had interactions with her before the incident.
National Response
The incident has resonated beyond Kolkata, prompting doctors at ten government hospitals in Delhi to strike in solidarity. Hospitals such as Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital, Maulana Azad Medical College, and Lady Hardinge Medical College are participating in the strike, which began at 9 am. The protesting doctors are demanding a CBI inquiry into the Kolkata incident and improved safety for medical practitioners nationwide. While outpatient services are suspended, emergency care continues.
The tragic death of the trainee doctor has highlighted serious issues regarding safety and security within medical institutions. As investigations continue and protests unfold, the demand for justice and systemic change remains at the forefront of this national outcry.
