The death of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 has raised serious questions and sparked public outrage. The family received frantic calls from the hospital, revealing the chaotic situation before the tragic incident.
The first call, made by the Assistant Superintendent of the hospital, urgently asked the family to reach the hospital, saying, “Your daughter is not well. Can you please come to the hospital immediately?” The father, sensing concern, pressed for more details, but the response was vague: “She is not well. We are admitting her. Can you come quickly?”
A second call soon followed, with the staff member sounding more distressed. “Her condition is very critical. Please come as soon as possible,” she urged. When the father demanded to know what had happened, the response remained vague: “The doctors will explain. Please come here quickly.”
The final call revealed the gravity of the situation, stating, “She might have committed suicide or died. The police are here.” The calls have raised questions about the circumstances leading to the doctor’s death and the hospital’s response.
The death has led to the arrest of Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer frequently seen on the hospital premises. He was arrested on August 10 after a Bluetooth device found near the doctor’s body and CCTV footage led police to him. Roy later confessed to the crime.
Roy’s actions that night were troubling. He and his friend drank alcohol, visited multiple red-light areas, and returned to the hospital where Roy attacked the victim. CCTV captured his movements, leading to his arrest. The case has now been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Mass protests erupted in Kolkata, demanding justice for the deceased doctor and swift action against the accused.
