In her first major interview since becoming the Democratic presidential nominee, US Vice President Kamala Harris blamed former President Donald Trump for the border security issues he often criticizes. Harris accused Trump of undermining a bipartisan effort to strengthen the US-Mexico border, responding to recent attacks from Trump’s campaign.
Trump recently linked Harris to illegal immigration and crime in a campaign ad, claiming, “If border czar Harris stays in charge, every week will bring a stream of illegal alien rapists and child predators.” Harris countered, arguing that Trump killed a bipartisan border security bill for political reasons. “Donald Trump killed the bill: a border security bill that would’ve put 1,500 more agents on the border,” Harris said.
The bill, according to Harris, aimed to bolster efforts to stop fentanyl and other illegal substances from crossing the border. She pledged to revive the bill if elected, promising it would significantly impact border security. “Not only would I push it, I would make sure it would come to my desk, and I would sign it,” Harris emphasized.
Harris clarified that she does not support decriminalizing illegal border crossings, underscoring the need for consequences for breaking immigration laws. She further addressed her support for border security measures like the wall, explaining her stance hasn’t changed since her earlier opposition during Trump’s presidency.
She highlighted her experience dealing with border issues as a prosecutor and attorney general, emphasizing that she has a proven record of tackling transnational criminal organizations involved in drug and human trafficking. Harris promised to enforce immigration laws if elected, presenting herself as the only candidate with direct experience on border-related legal enforcement.
