Bangladesh Reopens Schools and Colleges After Month-Long Closure Due to Unrest
Bangladesh’s education sector takes a significant step towards normalcy as schools, colleges, and universities across the country reopened on Sunday after more than a month of closure due to widespread unrest. The Ministry of Education issued a directive on August 15 to resume academic activities, following the easing of tensions that had gripped the nation.
The institutions were initially closed on July 17 amid violent protests led by students demanding reforms in the job quota system. The unrest eventually culminated in the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, leading to a political shift in the country.
Students Return Amid Heavy Traffic Congestion
On August 18, school children in uniform were seen heading to their respective institutions, many accompanied by their guardians. This return to routine, however, resulted in severe traffic congestion across many parts of Dhaka, reflecting the high turnout of students eager to resume their studies after the prolonged break.
The decision to reopen schools was initially scheduled for August 4, but the reopening was delayed for institutions within the 12 city corporations and Narsingdi municipality. The academic activities were further postponed due to safety concerns amidst ongoing tensions.
Resumption of Examinations and University Classes
In addition to the reopening of schools and colleges, the postponed Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations are set to resume on September 11, with the revised schedule indicating that the exams will conclude by October 23.
Public universities, which had suspended classes since July 1 due to teachers’ protests against a new pension scheme, are also expected to resume academic activities. The initial attempt to reopen institutions on August 7, following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government, was met with low student attendance, preventing a full resumption of classes.
A Return to Stability?
The reopening of educational institutions is a critical indicator of Bangladesh’s return to stability after a period of intense political and social turmoil. The student-led protests had brought the nation to a standstill, highlighting the deep-rooted dissatisfaction with the job quota system and the broader issues facing the country.
The Ministry of Education’s directive, signed by Deputy Secretary Mosammat Rahima Akhtar, emphasized the need to take all necessary steps to ensure the safe and smooth resumption of academic activities. As Bangladesh continues to navigate the aftermath of these events, the reopening of schools and colleges marks a hopeful step forward.
