Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath defended his government’s handling of the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, emphasising the scale of arrangements and dismissing opposition criticism as politically motivated. He said that people from all castes and religions were welcomed at Kumbh and said that even cricketer Mohammad Shami took the ritual bath.
Yogi’s Statement
“There was no discrimination against anyone at Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. Cricketer Mohammed Shami also took the holy dip. People from different caste, creed and religion, if they have come with devotion in heart, they have also taken the holy dip. Yes, those who came to tease (mock faith), they were scolded and sent away,” Yogi Adityanath said in Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha.
Akhilesh Yadav’s Jibe
Soon after, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav took a veiled jibe at the BJP and Yogi Adityanath and asked if “the cricketer’s name has also been changed”.
Mocking the Renaming
The jibe referred to the BJP government renaming several Muslim cities, places, and historical structures. Akhilesh Yadav has previously criticized the Uttar Pradesh government for renaming various locations.
Abdul Hamid Case
Recently, the Uttar Pradesh government removed the name of 1965 war hero Abdul Hamid from his school in Ghazipur district and ‘PM Shri Composite School’ was painted at the entrance. Akhilesh Yadav had slammed described the act as “extremely reprehensible”, adding that all that remains for “some people” is to rename “India” as “BJP”.

Yogi Adityanath emphasized the successful organization of the Kumbh Mela in his statement. He said that his government had provided every possible facility for the devotees visiting the Kumbh Mela.
