Aakhir Tak – In Depth
The Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj concluded on Wednesday, coinciding with Mahashivratri. This religious event attracted over 65 crore devotees from across the country. Hundreds of thousands of devotees gathered at the Triveni Sangam for the final Amrit Snan on Mahashivratri. This marked the end of the six-week-long religious gathering.
Significance of Maha Kumbh
Mahashivratri symbolizes the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This festival holds profound significance within the context of the Maha Kumbh, which occurs once every 12 years. It is believed to grant ‘moksha’ to the devotees. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva played a vital role in the Samudra Manthan, leading to the emergence of the Amrit Kumbh.
Devotee Crowd
The occasion drew massive crowds of devotees to the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati. This site is revered as holy by Hindus. According to government data, by 2 am, over 11.66 lakh devotees had immersed themselves in the Sangam. This number surged to 25.64 lakh within the next two hours. By 6 am, nearly 41.11 lakh devotees had taken a dip. Over one crore devotees were expected at Sangam on Wednesday.
Chief Minister’s Message
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath extended his wishes to devotees on the occasion of the final holy dip. He tweeted, “Hearty wishes to all the revered saints, Kalpvasis and devotees who have come to take a holy dip in the Triveni Sangam today on the holy bathing festival of Mahashivratri dedicated to the worship of Lord Bholenath in Mahakumbh-2025, Prayagraj. May Tribhuvanpati Lord Shiva and holy river Mother Ganga bless everyone. This is my prayer. Har Har Mahadev.”
Security Measures
A large number of devotees had gathered on the banks of the Sangam around midnight. They camped and waited patiently to take the dip at ‘Brahma Muhurt’. Many of them performed the bathing rituals much before the appointed time. The Maha Kumbh has witnessed six special bathing dates. These included Paush Purnima (January 13), Makar Sankranti (January 14), Mauni Amavasya (January 29), Basant Panchami (February 3), Maghi Purnima (February 12), and Mahashivratri (February 26).
Previous Snan
On Tuesday, an estimated 1.33 crore devotees took a holy dip at the Sangam and other ghats in the Mela area. This pushed the overall footfall for the Maha Kumbh 2025 beyond 65 crore. As pilgrims from across the country made their way to Prayagraj for the final ‘snan’, security personnel remained on high alert through the night. They closely monitored the swelling crowds at Mahakumbh Nagar and the ghats.
Traffic and Transportation
Railway stations, roads, and entry points to the city witnessed a constant influx of devotees. Law enforcement agencies, including police, paramilitary forces, and disaster response teams, have been deployed in large numbers. This was to manage the massive gathering, ensuring crowd control, security, and logistical coordination.
Use of Technology
Surveillance drones, CCTV monitoring with AI-enabled cameras, and command centers have been set up. These oversaw real-time developments. Medical teams and emergency response units have been stationed at strategic points. Disaster management forces were also on standby.
No Vehicle Zone
Given the scale of the event and the sheer volume of attendees, authorities have enforced a “no vehicle zone” in the mela area and Prayagraj. In addition, they have implemented strict crowd control measures and logistical support to facilitate a seamless culmination of Maha Kumbh 2025.
Railway Arrangements
To manage the heavy rush of departing pilgrims, the North Eastern Railway (NER) has deployed additional trains. They also strengthened security at key stations. NER CPRO Pankaj Kumar Singh said 60 trains, including regular, ring rail, long-distance, and special Mela trains, operated until 4 pm on February 25, with 25 more special trains running on Mahashivratri. The conclusion of Maha Kumbh 2025 was peaceful and safe.
