Why Nepal Airports Pose Unique Challenges for Pilots

On Wednesday morning, a Saurya Airlines aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, killing 18 people. The sole survivor was the pilot. The aircraft was bound for Pokhara and crashed into a gorge after catching fire.

Nepal has seen 72 fatal air accidents between 1962 and January 2023, resulting in 935 deaths. The country’s aviation safety record has been a concern for years, leading to a ban on Nepali airlines flying into the European Union since 2013.
