Supreme Court to Hear Kolkata Rape-Murder Case

Supreme Court Slams Kolkata Hospital Over Doctor’s Murder Case

The Supreme Court of India has taken up the case concerning the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old post-graduate trainee doctor in Kolkata. The incident, which occurred inside a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, has sent shockwaves across the country, leading to widespread protests.

Hearing Scheduled

A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Misra will preside over the case on Tuesday. The decision to take up this case came after a petition was filed before the Supreme Court on Saturday, urging the court to intervene.

Nationwide Outrage

The incident has sparked nationwide outrage, with doctors and medical staff from across the country staging protests, demanding swift justice. The severity of the crime has brought the safety of healthcare professionals under scrutiny, leading to increased calls for stronger protective measures in hospitals.

Arrest and Investigation

In a swift response, Kolkata Police arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer associated with the police, as the prime suspect. Roy’s arrest came just a day after the tragic event. However, due to alleged lapses in the police investigation, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for further probing.

Mob Violence and Political Turmoil

Amid the uproar, the situation escalated when a mob vandalized parts of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, including its emergency department. This act of violence led to the arrest of 32 individuals, with authorities continuing to search for 76 more suspects. The Kolkata Police emphasized that the seminar room where the crime took place remained untouched.

The violence has ignited a political firestorm in West Bengal. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the Left parties and the BJP of orchestrating the attacks, while the Opposition alleged that the mob had the backing of the ruling Trinamool Congress, aiming to influence the ongoing investigation.

As the nation awaits the Supreme Court’s proceedings, the focus remains on delivering justice for the young doctor and ensuring such a tragedy never occurs again.
