PM Modi Apologizes for Shivaji Statue Collapse Amid Outrage in Maharashtra

In a dramatic turn of events, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has publicly apologized for the collapse of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s statue at Rajkot Fort in Sindhudurg, Maharashtra. Unveiled just eight months ago, the 35-foot statue fell on August 26, 2024, sparking significant controversy in a state where Shivaji Maharaj is a revered figure.

Speaking at an event in Palghar, PM Modi described Shivaji Maharaj as “our deity” and expressed deep regret for the incident. “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is not just a name or a king. For us, he is our deity. Today, I bow my head at his feet and apologize to my deity,” said Modi.

The collapse of the statue has become a point of contention in Maharashtra’s political landscape, with the ruling Mahayuti alliance facing criticism. The incident, occurring just before the Assembly elections, has put additional pressure on the coalition government led by Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena, Ajit Pawar’s NCP, and the BJP.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has also voiced his regret, stating that he would not hesitate to touch Shivaji Maharaj’s feet a hundred times if necessary. He attributed the statue’s collapse to strong winds and severe weather conditions.

In addition to addressing the statue controversy, PM Modi highlighted the government’s commitment to development by laying the foundation stone for the Vadhvan Port in Palghar. With an estimated cost of Rs 76,000 crores, the port is expected to become the largest in terms of depth globally and create approximately 12 lakh employment opportunities.

PM Modi also inaugurated 218 fisheries projects worth around Rs 1,560 crores, emphasizing the significant investments and job creation these projects will bring to Maharashtra. He urged voters to consider the opposition’s stance on development and employment as they head to the polls.
