Opposition’s Mumbai Protest Over Shivaji Statue Collapse
In Mumbai, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) staged a significant protest against the collapse of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue in Sindhudurg district. This protest, known as the “Chappal Jode Maaro Yatra,” saw opposition leaders and workers carrying massive slippers as a symbolic gesture.
The 35-foot statue, unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year, collapsed on August 26 due to what Chief Minister Eknath Shinde attributed to strong winds. The statue’s collapse has sparked outrage among opposition leaders including Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, Congress state president Nana Patole, and NCP (SP) supremo Sharad Pawar, who all joined the protest.
Protesters marched from Hutatma Chowk to the Shivaji statue at the Gateway of India. The area around the Gateway of India was heavily cordoned off by police, and the police presence was significant throughout South Mumbai. Despite the protest’s scale, the Mumbai Police only permitted a gathering at Hutatma Chowk and limited senior leaders’ access to the Gateway of India.
During the protest, a bust of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was placed at Hutatma Chowk, and demonstrators carried placards criticizing the statue collapse. The protestors shouted slogans against the Eknath Shinde government, demanding accountability for the incident.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis criticized the MVA’s protest, labeling it as politically motivated. He accused the Maha Vikas Aghadi and the Congress party of not respecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, citing historical grievances including the portrayal of Shivaji Maharaj as a looter in Congress-led educational materials and previous incidents involving statue demolitions.
The protest highlighted the ongoing tensions between the opposition and the ruling BJP, as MVA leaders continued to demand answers for the statue collapse, while the BJP challenged the protest’s motivations.
