North India Rain Fury: 28 Dead, Delhi Braces for More

Torrential rains across northern India have led to at least 28 deaths, causing widespread disruption. The heavy downpours have resulted in landslides, house collapses, and severe traffic chaos. The worst-hit state is Rajasthan, where 16 people have died over the past two days—14 on Sunday alone.

In Rajasthan, Karauli district recorded an “exceptionally heavy rainfall” of 38 cm. Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma has convened a meeting to discuss safety measures amid the ongoing heavy rains. “Safety of all citizens of Rajasthan is our top priority,” Sharma stated, emphasizing the need for enhanced disaster management.

The intense rainfall has also affected Punjab and Haryana. In Haryana’s Yamunanagar district, several villages are inundated due to a breach in the Som River embankment. In Punjab’s Hoshiarpur, nine people, including eight family members, perished when their vehicle was swept away by an overflowing seasonal rivulet.

Agricultural fields are submerged across various regions, prompting the deployment of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). Additionally, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has suspended the Amarnath Yatra due to heavy rains in the area.

In Himachal Pradesh, landslides and flash floods have resulted in the deaths of three girls and left one person missing. Over 280 roads have been closed, affecting 458 power and 48 water supply schemes. In Uttar Pradesh’s Jalaun district, a roof collapse caused by the rains killed a woman and her seven-year-old son. In Uttarakhand, a massive landslide briefly blocked the Mandakini River at Bhimbali.

Delhi to Receive More Rain Today

Delhi is set to experience light to moderate rainfall with thundershowers today. Heavy rains have already caused waterlogging and traffic snarls on several roads. Tragically, a seven-year-old boy drowned in a waterlogged park in Rohini’s Sector 20 on Saturday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an advisory for Delhi residents to stay indoors, secure their windows and doors, and avoid unnecessary travel. The IMD forecasts more rain for the national capital today.

In Karnataka, a flood alert has been issued downstream of the Pampa Sagar dam following a gate malfunction that released a large amount of water.

Stay Safe and Updated

As the rains continue, officials are urging citizens to remain vigilant and adhere to safety advisories. The situation remains fluid, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
