The chilling details of the rape and murder of a Kolkata doctor have emerged, revealing that the accused, a civic volunteer, went to sleep and washed his clothes after committing the heinous act. The incident has sparked widespread protests among junior doctors demanding swift justice.
According to police reports, the accused, who is not officially affiliated with RG Kar Medical College and Hospital but frequents the premises, committed the crime inside a seminar hall. Following the brutal act, he returned to his residence, slept until late Friday morning, and then washed his clothes in an attempt to destroy evidence. Despite this, the police discovered bloodstains on the accused’s shoes during a subsequent search.
The body of the post-graduate trainee, who had been raped and murdered, was discovered on Friday morning. The accused was arrested the following day. The police are awaiting the final post-mortem report to determine if others were involved in the crime. The initial autopsy revealed severe injuries, including bleeding from the eyes, mouth, and private parts, with injuries on her left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger, and lips. Circumstantial evidence suggests that the doctor may have been murdered before being raped.
A police officer stated, “We are also interviewing individuals who were on duty from Thursday night into the next morning. CCTV footage is being reviewed.”
Protests by Junior Doctors
Protests by junior doctors demanding swift justice have continued for the third consecutive day, disrupting services in government hospitals across West Bengal. City Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal visited the hospital for the second time in three days to meet with protesting junior doctors, assuring them of a “transparent” investigation and urging them to refrain from spreading rumors.
The protesting junior doctors, house staff, and post-graduate trainees are calling for increased security measures and decisive government action. They view the incident as a symptom of broader systemic and societal issues requiring urgent attention.
In response to the protests, the state health department has canceled all leaves and holidays for senior doctors to manage the ongoing crisis. Support for the striking doctors has come from across the country, with the Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association of India (FORDA) backing the strike and calling for a nationwide suspension of elective services on Monday.
As a result of the protests, an assistant police officer stationed at the hospital has been removed. Commissioner Goyal emphasized the transparency of the investigation and denied any attempts to shield anyone involved. The police are also planning to introduce a toll-free number for public suggestions and complaints.
The junior doctors have vowed to continue their protest until their safety concerns are fully addressed. Emergency and non-emergency services will remain suspended as part of their cease-work action, which began on Friday evening.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has pledged to seek the death penalty for the perpetrator. In response to the heightened security concerns, Kolkata Police have deployed a large contingent at the hospital and implemented strict identification checks to ensure the safety of health workers. Additionally, the hospital authorities have dismissed two security personnel for negligence, which they believe contributed to the crime.
