The mob chanted slogans, demanding the execution of former Bangladesh Chief Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India on August 5 last year following widespread anti-government protests. The situation surrounding Sheikh Hasina remains highly volatile.

Meanwhile, ahead of the planned Awami League protest, numerous party supporters and workers were arrested. The party had intended to blockade Dhaka, including highways, by shutting down Bangladesh’s transport system on Thursday.

Bangladesh has experienced turmoil since the fall of the Hasina government on August 5 of the previous year. The Yunus government has repeatedly requested India to extradite Hasina, but New Delhi has extended her visa. Currently, Hasina faces multiple court cases, including charges of crimes against humanity. Hasina and her close associates are already facing arrest warrants from the Dhaka-based International Crimes Tribunal, and the Yunus government has sought assistance from the international police organization Interpol for her arrest. This incident in Dhaka further intensifies the political climate.

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has issued arrest warrants against Hasina and 11 others in connection with cases of enforced disappearance and extrajudicial killings during her 16-year tenure. Yunus’s government has intensified pressure on Hasina, with authorities revoking the passports of 97 individuals, including the deposed Prime Minister. Furthermore, Hasina’s party, the Awami League, has been barred from contesting future elections in Bangladesh.
