Aakhir Tak – In Depth
Mallikarjun Kharge’s remark in the Rajya Sabha has heated up the political atmosphere. A controversial comment made by Kharge during a debate on the National Education Policy (NEP) caused an uproar in the House. BJP MPs alleged that Kharge used derogatory language directed at the chairperson. Kharge clarified that his comments were aimed at the policies of the government. This incident led to demands for an apology in the House.
Dispute over NEP
The uproar began when the Rajya Sabha took up a discussion on the functioning of the Education Ministry. The opposition demanded an apology from Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The minister had made “uncivilized” comments towards DMK MPs, which sparked a dispute over the three-language policy.
Deputy Chairperson Harivansh called on Congress leader Digvijay Singh to start the discussion, but Kharge raised the issue of the Education Minister’s comments. Kharge stated, “This is a dictatorship.”
Kharge used an informal Hindi expression, indicating that the opposition would corner the government over the NEP issue, which caused an uproar from the treasury benches. Leader of the House JP Nadda intervened, stating that Kharge’s remark was reprehensible and unparliamentary. Tensions in the House escalated.
Kharge’s Apology
Amid the uproar, Kharge apologized to the Deputy Chairperson. He said, “I did not use such words for the chairperson. If the Deputy Chairperson has been hurt by my words, then I apologize. But I was criticizing the policies of the government.”
Later, in a post on X, Kharge said that he was referring to Pradhan’s comments “hurting the self-respect of a part of this country, a section of its people.”
Kharge added, “If you say that they are uncultured and uncivilized, then ask the minister to resign. The Modi government is talking about dividing the country. They are talking about breaking the nation.”
Three-Language Formula
At the center of the dispute is the “three-language formula” under the NEP, which Tamil Nadu has refused to implement. The DMK-Congress government has long viewed it as an attempt to impose Hindi on the state. This dispute has been ongoing for several years. The Tamil Nadu government remains committed to its bilingual policy.
