West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has sent a second letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the Kolkata rape-murder case. She expressed concern over the lack of response to her earlier appeal for stronger legislation against crimes targeting women. The case involves the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, which has sparked public outrage.
In her latest letter, Banerjee emphasized the urgent need for stricter laws to combat the rising cases of sexual violence. She posted a copy of the letter on her X (formerly Twitter) handle, highlighting that her previous communication had not received any response from the Prime Minister. She criticized the generic reply received from the Minister of Women and Child Development, calling it insufficient in addressing the issue’s gravity.
The Trinamool Congress leader underscored the need for better recognition of the seriousness of such crimes. She defended West Bengal’s efforts in improving women’s safety, pointing out that 10 exclusive Pocso (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) courts and 88 fast-track special courts (FTSCs) have been approved and are operational in the state. Additionally, she noted that 62 Pocso designated courts are fully functional with state funding.
Banerjee acknowledged the concerns regarding fast-track courts and emphasized that, as per central government guidelines, only retired judicial officers could be appointed as presiding officers in FTSCs. She noted that the High Court observed the necessity of permanent judicial officers for such severe cases, urging the Government of India to reconsider these guidelines.
Addressing criticisms related to the functionality of emergency helplines, Banerjee stated that helplines 112 and 1098 are working effectively in West Bengal, with Dial 100 also extensively used during emergencies.
The Chief Minister’s letter also reiterated her demand for a tough central law to punish rapists and ensure speedy trials through fast-track courts. Banerjee stressed the collective responsibility of lawmakers to eradicate such heinous crimes, ensuring that women feel safe and secure in society.
