The Calcutta High Court has transferred the investigation of the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This decision was made on Tuesday by a division bench headed by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam, who was hearing a petition filed by the victim’s parents. They had sought a court-monitored probe, expressing deep concerns over the current handling of the case by the Bengal government.
Lapses in the Investigation
The High Court, in its order, pointed out significant lapses in the investigation conducted so far. Despite five days passing since the incident, the probe had seen little progress. The court’s decision to hand over the investigation to the CBI was influenced by the fear that crucial evidence could be tampered with if the investigation continued under the current authorities. The court remarked that under normal circumstances, a report would have been called for, but the peculiarities of this case demanded immediate action.
Parental Concerns
The victim’s parents had filed the petition out of concern that the investigation was not being carried out effectively, which could potentially derail justice. The bench noted, “The victim’s parents fear that if the investigation is allowed to continue in this manner, it will derail, and the evidence may be destroyed.” This concern was echoed in several other petitions that also called for a CBI probe into the matter.
Court’s Strong Reprimand
The court’s criticism of the Bengal government’s investigation was scathing. The bench emphasized that the lack of significant progress warranted an immediate transfer of the case to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation. The High Court’s decision reflects the gravity of the situation and the need for swift and decisive action to ensure justice is served.
The transfer of the case to the CBI underscores the importance of an unbiased and effective investigation in ensuring justice for the victim and her family. As the CBI takes over, there is hope that the case will be handled with the seriousness it demands, and the perpetrators will be brought to justice.
