The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has assigned two of its most senior women officers, Sampat Meena and Seema Pahuja, to lead the investigation into the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. Sampat Meena, an Additional Director at CBI, is well-known for her leadership in high-profile cases, such as the 2020 Hathras rape-murder and the 2017 Unnao rape case.
Meena, an IPS officer from the 1994 batch, heads a 25-member CBI team dedicated to uncovering the truth behind the murder of the 31-year-old doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This case has sparked nationwide protests among the medical community.
The on-ground investigation will be led by Additional Superintendent of Police Seema Pahuja, a decorated officer with two gold medals for exceptional investigation work between 2007 and 2018. Pahuja, who had once considered voluntary retirement due to family obligations, was convinced by the then CBI Director to continue her service. Her perseverance paid off when she successfully secured a conviction in the rape and murder of a Class 10 student in Himachal Pradesh in 2017, a case that had gripped the state in outrage. The culprit, a woodcutter, was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2021.
The Kolkata case is expected to be handled with the same level of diligence and thoroughness. The medical community and the general public are hopeful for swift justice under the leadership of these two seasoned officers.
In the Hathras case, a 19-year-old Dalit woman was gang-raped by four upper-caste men, leading to her death two weeks later. The Uttar Pradesh administration faced severe criticism for their handling of the case, especially concerning the alleged forced cremation of the victim’s body without her family’s consent.
Similarly, the 2017 Unnao rape case shocked the nation, where a young girl was kidnapped and raped by expelled BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar. Both cases showcased the investigative prowess of officers like Meena and Pahuja, raising public confidence in their ability to handle the Kolkata case effectively.
