Helicopter Dropped Mid-Air in Kedarnath by MI-17 Towing Chopper
In a rare incident, a faulty helicopter being towed for repairs by an Indian Air Force MI-17 helicopter was dropped mid-air in Kedarnath on Saturday. The helicopter, which had suffered a technical fault earlier this year, was being transported to the Gauchar airstrip when the mishap occurred.
Incident Details and Crash
The MI-17 helicopter lost its balance due to the weight of the faulty helicopter it was towing. As a result, the pilot of the MI-17 was forced to release the damaged helicopter near an open space in the valley, close to the Tharu camp in Kedarnath. The incident happened at approximately 7 am, according to Rudraprayag Tourism official Rahul Chaubey.
Background of the Faulty Helicopter
The damaged helicopter had initially suffered a technical fault on May 24 during a landing attempt near Kedarnath. It had made an emergency landing just 100 meters before the designated helipad, but all passengers on board had escaped without injury. Following the incident, it was determined that the helicopter required repairs, leading to Saturday’s attempt to transport it to the Gauchar airstrip.
No Passengers or Luggage on Board
Fortunately, there were no passengers or luggage on the helicopter at the time of the crash. Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the crash site to check for any casualties. As per the latest reports, no injuries or fatalities have been reported.
Official Statement and Appeal
Rahul Chaubey has appealed to the public to refrain from spreading rumors or unverified information about the incident. He emphasized that all necessary rescue operations are underway and that the Air Force and local authorities are handling the situation with utmost care.
This incident highlights the challenges faced in high-altitude operations, especially when dealing with faulty equipment that requires airlifting.
