Judiciary Lacks Sensitivity in Rape Cases: President

President Droupadi Murmu voiced her concerns over the judiciary’s handling of rape cases, emphasizing the backlog and pendency as significant challenges. During her address at the National Conference of the District Judiciary, she highlighted that delayed court decisions, especially in sensitive cases like rape, lead to a perception that the justice system lacks sensitivity.

“When court decisions in cases like rape come only after a generation has passed, the common person feels that the justice process lacks sensitivity,” President Murmu stated. She further expressed that people in rural areas see the judiciary as divine, often quoting, “Bhagwan ke ghar der hai andher nahi” (in God’s house, there may be a delay, but no injustice). However, she questioned the extent of these delays, stressing the emotional and psychological toll on victims awaiting justice.

Murmu referred to a recent case of a 31-year-old trainee doctor’s rape and murder in Kolkata, criticizing the prolonged legal processes that leave victims and their families in despair. She also pointed out that some perpetrators continue to live freely, exacerbating the pain of the victims, who often live in fear and face societal stigma.

President Murmu emphasized the urgent need to change the “culture of adjournments” in courts to ensure prompt justice. She lauded the increase in women judicial officers, but stressed the need for systemic changes to restore public confidence in the judiciary. The event, attended by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, also included the release of a new flag and insignia of the Supreme Court, symbolizing a commitment to justice.
