As Jammu and Kashmir gears up for the third and final phase of polling, campaigning will end today. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and party leader Sachin Pilot will address rallies across the region. The third phase of polling is scheduled for October 1, with results to be announced on October 8.
A total of 40 constituencies will go to polls in this phase, with 24 of them located in the Jammu division. Kharge will hold meetings in Jasrota and Ramnagar, encouraging voters to support candidates from the Congress-National Conference alliance.
Last weekend, Kharge addressed a press conference in Jammu but missed rallies in Haryana due to reported fatigue from extensive travel.
Former Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot will also speak at gatherings in Udhampur West, Bani, and Nagrota Assembly constituencies. Congress aims to challenge the BJP’s stronghold in Jammu.
On Saturday, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi addressed public meetings in Billawar and Bishnah, marking her first rallies of the season. While addressing a rally in Bishnah, Priyanka criticized the BJP’s “Naya Kashmir” slogan, asserting that the region is facing an “unprecedented crisis” due to the BJP’s governance over the past decade.
She also pledged to advocate for the restoration of statehood for the union territories, which is a promise in the Congress election manifesto.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Jammu ahead of the third phase of Assembly polls, accusing the Congress of disrespecting the sacrifices made by the armed forces. He claimed that the Congress waved “white flags” whenever the country faced attacks from across the border.
