External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, criticized Pakistan, asserting that cross-border activities marked by terrorism, separatism, and extremism cannot support trade, energy flows, or connectivity. He stressed the need for SCO nations to counter these “three evils” to ensure peace and development. Jaishankar emphasized that without peace and stability, development and growth are impossible, reflecting the core principles of the SCO Charter.

While delivering India’s national statement at the SCO Council of Heads of Government meeting, Jaishankar reiterated that cooperation must be based on mutual respect and sovereign equality. He cautioned against cherry-picking global trade and transit standards, stating that SCO’s progress hinges on genuine partnerships, not unilateral agendas.

The Minister also highlighted India’s global initiatives, including the International Solar Alliance, Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, and promotion of sustainable practices like Yoga and Mission LiFE. He acknowledged the global challenges, including two major conflicts and the difficulties faced by developing nations post-COVID, stressing that solutions lie in fostering trust, good neighborliness, and regional cooperation.

Jaishankar’s participation in the summit was significant, marking India’s highest-level engagement with Pakistan in almost a decade, though no bilateral talks were planned. He congratulated Pakistan on its presidency of the SCO summit and reiterated India’s full support for a successful term.
