Iran Cancels Flights as Threat of Israeli Strikes Looms Large
Iran has canceled all flights from its airports overnight due to the looming threat of Israeli strikes. The cancellations, effective from 9 PM to 6 AM, coincide with the first anniversary of the October 7 attacks, during which the Gaza-based terror group Hamas launched armed incursions into southern Israel.
According to the spokesperson for the Civil Aviation Organization, the flights were grounded due to operational restrictions. Recently, Iran retaliated against Israel by launching missiles after the killing of commanders from its proxy groups, including former Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah.
Israel vowed to retaliate, stating that “Iran will pay for it.” This precautionary measure from Iran also comes on the first anniversary of the October 7 attacks, which resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 people, including civilians attending a music festival near the Gaza Strip.
The attack, referred to by Hamas as “Operation Al-Aqsa Flood,” is considered the deadliest assault on Israel since its establishment in 1948, with fatalities exceeding those of previous terrorist incidents. This triggered a massive Israeli military response, resulting in a large-scale siege and bombing campaign in Gaza, which, according to Hamas’s health authorities, has led to over 41,000 deaths, many of whom were civilians, including women and children.
The violence has escalated tensions across the region, with Iran-backed militant groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, Houthis in Yemen, and various resistance groups in Iraq launching attacks against Israel.
Hezbollah suffered a significant blow after its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in an airstrike in Beirut. Days before his death, Israeli intelligence forces conducted sophisticated attacks targeting Hezbollah’s communication systems, leading to over 550 casualties within the group.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military announced on Sunday that they have deployed additional troops to defend southern communities and areas bordering Gaza in anticipation of the anniversary of the October 7 attacks.
