Indian hockey icon PR Sreejesh has announced his retirement from international hockey after the Paris Olympics, which begin on July 26. This will be Sreejesh’s fourth Olympic Games, and he hopes to conclude his illustrious career with another medal to add to his bronze from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Sreejesh, who made his debut for India in 2006, shared his retirement decision on social media, reflecting on his journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of the world’s best goalkeepers. “I still remember my father selling our cow to buy my first kit,” he recalled. “His sacrifice ignited a fire within me, pushing me to strive harder and dream bigger.”
The journey to international stardom was filled with challenges and milestones. Sreejesh’s first international trip to Australia was a defining moment, as he pursued his dream on foreign soil. Despite a disappointing performance at the 2012 London Olympics, where India lost all their matches, Sreejesh’s resolve to never back down led him to historic victories, including the Asian Champions Trophy and an Asian Games gold, both won in intense shootouts against Pakistan.
Leading the Indian team as captain in subsequent tournaments was an honor Sreejesh holds dear. Being named the World’s Best Goalkeeper is a recognition he cherishes. The crowning glory of his career came with the bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, a moment filled with tears of joy and immense pride.
As he prepares for his final international appearance in Paris, Sreejesh looks back with pride and gratitude. “This journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, and I am forever grateful for the love and support from my family, teammates, coaches, and fans. Thank you for believing in me. Here’s to the end of a chapter and the beginning of a new adventure,” he expressed.
Sreejesh’s retirement marks the end of an era for Indian hockey, but his legacy and contributions will continue to inspire future generations.
