Malaysia PM Hopes India Will Address Minority Issues and Strengthen Bilateral Relations
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, during his state visit to India, acknowledged the serious challenges India faces concerning minority and religious issues. He expressed hope that India would continue to play its rightful role in addressing these concerns. Speaking at an interactive session at the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) in Delhi, Ibrahim emphasized the importance of India’s historical role in standing up for the Global South against colonialism and imperialism.
Ibrahim’s remarks come amid improving India-Malaysia relations following tensions during the tenure of former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed, who criticized India’s abrogation of Article 370 and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). These actions led to strained relations and trade restrictions. However, since Anwar Ibrahim took office in 2022, both countries have taken steps to mend ties, including settling trade in their respective currencies and increasing Indian palm oil imports from Malaysia.
The issue of Zakir Naik, a controversial Islamic preacher wanted in India for terrorism-related charges, continues to be a point of contention in bilateral relations. Naik, who fled India in 2016 and received asylum in Malaysia in 2018, was not a topic of discussion during the recent talks between Ibrahim and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, Ibrahim indicated that Malaysia might consider India’s extradition request if compelling evidence is presented.
Ibrahim stressed that his government does not condone terrorism and is open to reviewing any evidence against Naik. He emphasized the need for ongoing cooperation between India and Malaysia in combating terrorism and enhancing bilateral relations, despite differences on specific issues.
During his visit, Ibrahim praised India’s role as a beacon of democracy and freedom in the region, highlighting the contributions of historical figures like Jawaharlal Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi, and Sri Aurobindo. He recalled his earlier interactions with former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, describing India as an enigma with a rich intellectual and political legacy.
In a joint press conference, PM Modi announced the elevation of the India-Malaysia partnership to a ‘Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,’ with a focus on expanding economic ties. Modi highlighted Malaysia’s $5 billion investment in India last year and identified areas for potential cooperation, including semiconductors, financial technology, defense, and artificial intelligence (AI). Additionally, India agreed to make a one-time export of 200,000 metric tons of non-basmati rice to Malaysia, despite a general export ban on such shipments.
Ibrahim’s visit, his first since becoming Prime Minister, marks a significant step in strengthening the India-Malaysia relationship, with both leaders committed to advancing economic and strategic cooperation.
