Aakhir Tak – In Depth
Tensions between India and Canada escalated on Monday when the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned Canada’s Charge d’Affaires. The meeting was held in response to allegations against Indian high commissioners and diplomats, which India claimed were baseless and unacceptable.
The diplomatic spat stems from Canada’s accusations concerning the investigation into the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Canada had raised suspicions about Indian officials being involved, which India strongly denied.
During the meeting, India conveyed its deep concern about the “current atmosphere of extremism and violence” in Canada, emphasizing that it poses a serious threat to the safety of Indian diplomats stationed there. Secretary (East) of the MEA communicated to the Canadian representative that such allegations and hostile actions were not conducive to the bilateral relationship between the two countries.
India highlighted its willingness to cooperate with Canada but stressed that such baseless accusations should not be made. The growing extremism and violence in Canada, particularly targeting Indian diplomats, is a major concern for India, and it expects Canada to take necessary steps to ensure their safety. The relations between the two nations, already under strain, could be further impacted if such accusations continue.
