Heart Patient Dies After Treatment by Failed MBBS Student in Kerala
In a tragic case of medical negligence, a 60-year-old heart patient died in a private hospital in Kozhikode, Kerala, after being treated by an “unqualified” resident medical officer (RMO). The Kerala Police arrested the RMO, identified as Abu Abraham Luke, who had not completed his second year of MBBS studies.
The incident occurred on September 23 when Vinod Kumar, suffering from severe chest pain and breathlessness, was brought to the hospital. Unfortunately, he passed away shortly after receiving treatment. Upon investigation, it was discovered that the medical officer responsible for his care was still a second-year medical student who had failed to complete his degree despite enrolling in 2011.
The deceased’s son, Dr. Ashwin Pachaatt Vinod, a resident doctor at PGI Chandigarh, expressed shock at the revelation. He said, “I lost my father due to gross negligence. The RMO responsible for my father’s care had not even cleared his second-year MBBS exams.”
Dr. Ashwin had filed a complaint, following which the police registered an FIR and arrested Luke. He added, “I hope no one else in the country suffers the same fate as my father.”
The hospital management acknowledged the lapse in verifying Luke’s qualifications and dismissed him from his position. The manager explained that they had checked Luke’s medical registration number before hiring him, but he had worked in reputed hospitals in the past, so no doubts were raised.
This tragic incident has raised serious concerns over the verification processes in private hospitals, especially in emergency cases. The victim’s family hopes that stricter measures will be taken to avoid such mishaps in the future.
