The Enforcement Directorate (ED) recently conducted search operations at multiple locations in West Bengal, intensifying its probe into the alleged financial scam involving the RG Kar Medical Centre and Hospital. The raids, carried out in Howrah, Sonarpur, and Hooghly, included the premises of a relative of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College.
This development comes on the heels of a brutal incident in August when a 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and murdered at the hospital, sparking widespread outrage and protests across the country. The tragedy has cast a long shadow over the institution, with ongoing investigations now expanding to financial irregularities.
Sources have revealed that one of the raided locations in Hooghly is linked to Dr. Ghosh, who served as the principal of RG Kar Medical College from February 2021 until September 2023. Despite being transferred in October 2023, Dr. Ghosh returned to his position within a month, remaining at the helm until the day of the trainee doctor’s murder.
Last week, the ED registered a case based on an FIR filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which named Dr. Ghosh in connection with financial misconduct at the college. The CBI’s FIR lists charges including criminal conspiracy, cheating, dishonesty, and violations of Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The allegations point to significant financial irregularities during Dr. Ghosh’s tenure, including the misuse of funds and administrative lapses. The FIR notes that these offenses are cognizable and non-bailable, adding a severe legal dimension to the ongoing investigation.
Dr. Ghosh was arrested on September 2 by the CBI in the corruption case and was subsequently taken into custody. The raids by the ED mark a critical step in unraveling the full extent of the financial discrepancies that have marred the reputation of one of Bengal’s leading medical institutions.
The ED’s investigation underscores the growing scrutiny on medical institutions in the region, highlighting a broader concern over governance and accountability.
