Muhammad Yunus, the head of Bangladesh’s interim government, has categorically denied that the recent attacks on minority Hindus in Bangladesh are communal. Instead, he emphasized that these incidents are politically motivated, urging India to rethink its portrayal of the situation. Yunus’s statement comes amid rising tensions between India and Bangladesh over the safety of minorities.
Yunus highlighted that the attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh are not driven by communal hatred but are politically orchestrated. He questioned India’s narrative of these incidents, which, according to him, exaggerates the extent and nature of the violence. “These attacks are political in nature and not communal. And India is propagating these incidents in a big way,” Yunus stated during an interview.
The violence in Bangladesh, which included the vandalism of Hindu temples, businesses, and properties, escalated after student-led protests following former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ouster on August 5. Yunus, appointed as Chief Adviser after Hasina’s removal, insists that these incidents are fallout from political unrest rather than communal violence.
Yunus strongly rejected the notion that Bangladesh could turn into another Afghanistan without Sheikh Hasina’s leadership. He urged India to drop this narrative and focus on strengthening bilateral ties. “The way forward is for India to come out of the narrative. The narrative is that everybody is Islamist, BNP is Islamist, and everyone else is Islamist and will make this country into Afghanistan,” Yunus said.
Yunus also called for improved relations between India and Bangladesh, emphasizing that the current strained ties need collaborative efforts to heal. He stressed the importance of moving beyond misconceptions and working together for the betterment of both nations.
Additionally, the interim government has communicated to India that Sheikh Hasina, now in India, should remain silent until Bangladesh requests her extradition. Yunus stated, “If India wants to keep her until the time Bangladesh wants her back, the condition would be that she has to keep quiet.”
These comments by Yunus reflect the growing complexities in India-Bangladesh relations. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently expressed concern over the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh, hoping for a swift return to normalcy.
