Opposition Targets DMK Government After 5 Die at Chennai Air Show

A political storm has engulfed Tamil Nadu after the deaths of five spectators and the hospitalization of over 200 people during an Indian Air Force (IAF) air show in Chennai. The event, held at Marina Beach to celebrate the 92nd anniversary of the IAF, turned chaotic due to overcrowding, traffic congestion, and inadequate amenities.

AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami criticized the DMK government for poor planning and crowd management, blaming Chief Minister MK Stalin’s administration. He said, “The administrative arrangements were inadequate, with insufficient police forces and no drinking water. Five people have died so far.”

Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai also condemned the government, accusing it of negligence. He stated that the deaths and injuries could have been prevented with proper facilities. Annamalai directly criticized CM Stalin, calling the incident a “complete failure of administration.”

Amid mounting criticism, Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian defended the government, stating that they had gone beyond the IAF’s requests, organizing two medical teams and 40 ambulances on-site. However, opposition leaders continue to demand resignations over what they call “complete mismanagement.”
