On Friday, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu visited the Lord Venkateswara Temple in Tirumala to offer silk robes, marking the first day of the annual Brahmotsavams. This visit came amid a significant controversy surrounding the laddu prasadam at the temple.

Offering of Silk Robes

Naidu, accompanied by his wife, performed the ceremonial offering of “pattu vastrams” (silk robes) to the deity on behalf of the state government. The couple carried the silk robes on a golden plate atop their heads and entered the temple through the main entrance, a traditional act symbolizing devotion and respect. After the offering, the temple’s chief priests tied the Parivattam (sacred thread) to Naidu, who was adorned with the Thirunaamam on his forehead.

Temple Administration Honors Naidu

Following the offering, the TTD (Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam) Executive Officer Shyamala Rao and Additional EO Venkaiah Chowdary honored Naidu by presenting him with the Sri Vari’s Sesha Vastram (sacred cloth), symbolizing special respect for his participation in the ceremony.

Laddu Controversy and SIT Probe

Earlier the same day, the Supreme Court issued an order for a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into allegations that substandard ghee containing animal fat was used to prepare laddu prasadam at the Tirupati temple. These claims have triggered outrage among devotees, as the prasadam holds spiritual significance for millions.

Structure of the SIT

The SIT, which will be supervised by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), includes state police officers and a member from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The Supreme Court emphasized that the allegations could deeply hurt the sentiments of devotees worldwide. Therefore, the investigation will be closely monitored by the CBI director to ensure swift and transparent proceedings.
