The much-anticipated ‘One Nation One Election’ concept may soon become a reality as the BJP-led NDA government is preparing to table this bill during its current term in Parliament.
According to sources, the Modi government is planning to introduce this bill, a proposal that was emphasized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day speech. Addressing the nation, PM Modi stated that “One Nation, One Election is the need of the hour” and urged everyone to work together for this initiative.
This news comes as PM Modi approaches the first 100 days of his third consecutive term in office. PM Modi, who took the oath of office on June 9, five days after the Lok Sabha election results were announced, has made ‘One Nation One Election’ a key promise in the BJP’s election manifesto.
In an exclusive interview with India Today TV before the elections, PM Modi had advocated for shorter election cycles, stating that “elections should be held in three or four months; politics should not dominate the entire five-year term.” He also highlighted the cost-saving benefits of such a system.
In March, a high-level committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind recommended that simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies be conducted as a first step. The committee further suggested that local body elections follow within 100 days, ensuring a synchronized election cycle across the nation.
Currently, elections for state assemblies and the Lok Sabha are conducted separately and typically occur after the five-year term of the government ends or if the government is dissolved.
