Aakhir Tak – In Depth
The Election Commission of India announced on Tuesday that by-elections will be held for 50 assembly and Lok Sabha seats in November. This includes by-elections for 48 assembly constituencies and two parliamentary constituencies. The voting for the Wayanad seat will take place on November 13, while voting for one assembly constituency in Uttarakhand and the Nanded parliamentary seat in Maharashtra will occur on November 20.
The counting of votes is scheduled for November 23, coinciding with elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand. The Wayanad seat became vacant after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi decided to retain the family bastion of Rae Bareli. His sister, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, is set to make her electoral debut from Wayanad.
In Uttar Pradesh, by-elections will be held for nine assembly seats: Meerapur, Kundarki, Ghaziabad, Khair, Karhal, Phulpur, Katehari, Majhawan, and Sishamau.
Meanwhile, no fresh dates have been announced for the Milkipur assembly constituency and West Bengal’s Lok Sabha seat, as petitions for both are pending in high courts. The Milkipur seat was won by Samajwadi Party leader Awadhesh Prasad, who contested and won the Faizabad Lok Sabha seat this year.
In Kerala, the bye-elections will take place for two assembly seats: Palakkad and Chelakkara. The bye-election for the Kedarnath assembly seat in Uttarakhand is scheduled for November 20.
