In a shocking turn of events, the main accused in a heinous gangrape case in Assam has died while trying to escape from police custody. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday when the accused, Tafazul Islam, attempted to flee by jumping into a pond during a crime scene investigation in Nagaon district.

Tafazul Islam, arrested on August 23, was a prime suspect in the brutal gangrape of a 14-year-old girl. On Saturday, around 4 AM, the police were escorting Islam to the crime scene for further investigation. However, upon reaching the spot, Islam made a desperate attempt to escape by diving into a nearby pond. The police immediately launched a rescue operation, but his body was recovered from the water after two hours.
Nagaon Superintendent of Police, Swapnaneel Deka, confirmed the incident, stating, “When a police team took him last night to the spot for investigation where the incident took place, the prime accused tried to flee and jumped into a pond located nearby the site.”

The gangrape occurred on Thursday evening when the 14-year-old victim was returning home from her tuition classes. The accused, along with two other men, allegedly assaulted and raped the girl, leaving her unconscious by the roadside. The local residents found the girl in a critical condition and immediately informed the police, who then initiated a manhunt for the perpetrators.
Ongoing Investigation and Search for Other Accused
While Tafazul Islam’s escape attempt has ended in tragedy, the search for the other two suspects involved in this horrifying crime is still ongoing. The authorities have intensified their efforts to bring the culprits to justice.

The survivor, who is currently receiving treatment at a medical unit in Nagaon district, is under the care of a multi-specialty team of doctors. In addition to medical support, a team of psychiatrists has been called in to provide counseling and mental support to help her cope with the trauma.
