Air India Fined ₹90 Lakh for Unqualified Pilots

Cartridge Found on Dubai-Delhi Flight, Investigation On

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has imposed a hefty fine of ₹90 lakh on Tata Group-owned Air India. This action came in response to the airline operating a flight with non-qualified pilots. The regulatory body also penalized two senior officials of Air India—Director of Operations Pankul Mathur and Director of Training Manish Vasavada—with fines of ₹6 lakh and ₹3 lakh, respectively, for their roles in the lapse.

According to a press release issued by DGCA, Air India operated a flight commanded by a non-trainer line captain paired with a non-line-released first officer. The DGCA views this as a serious scheduling incident with significant safety implications. The airline’s action was in clear violation of the regulatory provisions, putting passenger safety at risk.

The incident came to light following a voluntary report submitted by Air India on July 10. DGCA promptly began an investigation, revealing multiple deficiencies and violations within the airline’s operations. Show cause notices were issued on July 22 to the flight commander and other key post holders, giving them an opportunity to present their side of the story.

The aviation regulator emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that such lapses could have dire consequences for flight safety. This incident underscores the need for stringent adherence to safety protocols and regulations in the aviation industry.
