A distressing incident of abuse has emerged from Karnataka’s Raichur, where a Class 3 student, Tarun Kumar, endured severe physical torture at the Ramakrishna Ashram. The alleged torture was inflicted by the ashram’s in-charge, Venugopal, and others, following accusations of pen theft.
The Incident
According to reports, Tarun Kumar was subjected to brutal treatment over an alleged pen theft. The young student was reportedly beaten with firewood and later with a bat when the firewood broke. His tormentors also inflicted cuts on his body and forced him to beg for alms at a railway station, where he did not receive any money. Tarun, describing his ordeal, mentioned that the severe abuse was solely due to the stolen pen.
The boy’s injuries were extensive. His eyes were swollen, and he required hospitalization for treatment. His family’s financial struggles had led them to leave Tarun at the ashram, which was meant to be a place of care and education.
Background and Allegations
Tarun’s family claimed that he was wrongfully accused of stealing a pen. According to his mother, Tarun had simply picked up a fallen pen and placed it elsewhere. A teacher’s pen was given to him by another student, and this seemingly minor incident escalated into a severe case of abuse.
His mother refuted the theft allegations and revealed that Tarun was subjected to extreme measures by the ashram staff. She described how her son was hit with belts, blindfolded, and restrained. The brutal treatment continued until midnight, resulting in significant physical and emotional trauma for the young boy.
Response and Actions Taken
The disturbing situation was brought to light when Tarun’s mother visited the ashram and discovered the extent of her son’s injuries. Sudarshan, a child rights activist, has intervened, and the matter has been escalated to the Women and Child Welfare Ministry. An FIR has been filed against the accused individuals, and steps are being taken to ensure justice for Tarun Kumar.
This case highlights a grave issue of child abuse within institutions meant to provide care. The community and authorities must work together to prevent such incidents and protect vulnerable children from such heinous acts of violence.
