Olympic Gold Winner Imane Khelif Files Legal Complaint Over Online Harassment
Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who made history by becoming the first Algerian woman to win an Olympic gold medal in boxing, has taken legal action against the online harassment she has faced. Khelif, who triumphed in the women’s 66kg boxing final, filed a formal complaint through her lawyer, Nabil Boudi, as she prepares for a legal battle that mirrors her recent triumphs in the ring.
Khelif’s historic win at the Paris Olympics 2024 has been overshadowed by intense scrutiny and derogatory comments on social media. Critics have questioned her womanhood, leading to widespread debate and outcry. Despite the controversy, Khelif remained steadfast, declaring her intent to change perceptions globally.
“All that is being said about me on social media is immoral. I want to change the minds of people around the world,” Khelif stated after her victory. The complaints intensified after her fight against Italian boxer Angela Carini, which ended within 46 seconds, with Carini admitting that she “never felt a punch like this.”
Imane Khelif’s Legal Route
The backlash against Khelif primarily stems from doubts about her eligibility to compete as a woman, a controversy fueled by the International Boxing Association’s (IBA) decision to disqualify her and Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting from the World Boxing Championship in 2023 due to the presence of XY chromosomes. However, after the International Olympics Association (IOC) took over governance, both boxers were deemed eligible to compete.
“As for whether I qualify or not, whether I am a woman or not, I have made many statements in the media,” Khelif emphasized. “I am fully qualified to take part in this competition. I’m a woman like any other woman. I was born a woman, I lived a woman, I competed as a woman, there’s no doubt about that.”
Khelif’s journey is not just about her victory in the ring but also about challenging societal norms and prejudices. Her success, despite the adversities and the public scrutiny, has only fueled her resolve to stand firm against her detractors.
Imane Khelif Wins Gold
Khelif’s victory in the 66kg category final, where she defeated world champion Yang Liu of China, is a testament to her resilience and skill. Despite the negativity surrounding her, Khelif emerged victorious and used the platform to address the gender controversy that had engulfed her journey.
“The detractors are enemies of success, that is what I call them. And that also gives my success a special taste because of these attacks,” Khelif stated boldly, emphasizing that her triumph is sweeter because of the obstacles she has faced.
