Controversy Erupts Over Abu Azmi’s Aurangzeb Remarks; Yogi Adityanath Responds
The controversy surrounding Maharashtra Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi’s remarks glorifying Mughal ruler Aurangzeb has intensified, with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath weighing in on the matter. Adityanath has urged the Samajwadi Party to expel the Maharashtra MLA and send him to Uttar Pradesh, asserting that “Uttar Pradesh knows well how to take care of such people.”
Yogi Adityanath’s Strong Statement
Adityanath questioned, “A person who feels ashamed of the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, but considers Aurangzeb his hero, does he even have the right to live in India?” He further asked, “Why is the Samajwadi Party not disowning him?”. Azmi recently claimed that India prospered under the 17th-century rule of Aurangzeb, describing him as a great administrator who also built temples. Although he retracted the remarks, they triggered strong backlash from the BJP and other parties. These parties accused him of attempting to whitewash Aurangzeb’s legacy of cruelty and intolerance, highlighting his responsibility for atrocities against Hindus and attempts to impose religious conversions.
Uproar in the Assembly
Addressing the UP Assembly, Adityanath urged Akhilesh Yadav’s party to take a firm stance on the issue. “On one hand, you criticise the Kumbh and on the other, you glorify Aurangzeb — a ruthless, fanatical ruler who destroyed temples and crushed India’s faith. What is stopping you from taking action against this leader?”, he asked. He challenged the Samajwadi Party to summon Azmi to a public gathering to clarify his remarks or to send him to Uttar Pradesh.
Azmi’s Suspension
Azmi, representing the Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar Constituency in Mumbai, has been suspended from the Maharashtra Assembly until the end of the current Budget Session. Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde led the attack on the SP leader in the Assembly, labeling him a “traitor” and arguing that he has no right to be a member of the House. Maharashtra minister Chandrakant Patil, who moved the motion, emphasized that the comments “do not befit the stature of a member of the Assembly and are an insult to the democratic institution of the Legislative Assembly.”
Azmi’s Explanation Amidst Controversy
Following the escalating controversy, Azmi retracted his remarks on Tuesday, claiming they were misinterpreted and that his statements were based on previously published historical accounts. In a video statement released on Wednesday, Azmi condemned his suspension, asserting that it was imposed despite his retraction of the controversial statements.
