Heavy rainfall has led to catastrophic landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad district, with the death toll now at 308. The disaster struck the hilly areas, burying communities under rubble and causing widespread damage. Rescue operations are in full swing, with the deployment of advanced drone-based radar to aid in finding trapped survivors.
Devastating Impact of Wayanad Landslides
On Tuesday, Wayanad experienced severe landslides caused by relentless heavy rains. The region’s challenging terrain and destroyed infrastructure have complicated rescue efforts. As of Friday, over 200 individuals have sustained injuries, and the number of fatalities continues to rise.
Rescue teams are battling difficult conditions including damaged roads, collapsed bridges, and a lack of heavy equipment. These challenges are impeding the clearing of debris and accessing affected areas.
Rescue Operations and Drone-Based Radar
Rescue efforts have been intensified as operations enter their fourth day. A coordinated team of the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Coast Guard, and Indian Navy is leading the search. They are supported by local volunteers and forest department personnel.
The rescue operations are divided into six zones:
- Attamala and Aaranmala
- Mundakkai
- Punjirimattam
- Vellarmala Village Road
- GVHSS Vellarmala
- Downstream of the river Chaliyar
The Coast Guard and Navy are also conducting searches along the Chaliyar riverbanks, where bodies may have been carried. To enhance search efforts, a drone-based radar from Delhi is expected to arrive soon.
International and Political Support
The United States President Joe Biden has expressed condolences and praised the bravery of the rescue teams. In addition, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are actively involved in the relief operations. They are meeting with local officials and victims to coordinate aid efforts.
Ongoing Challenges and Forecast
Rescue teams are working tirelessly, with around 1,000 individuals rescued so far. However, the death toll may increase as more areas are accessed. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted additional rainfall in Wayanad and other districts, prompting a red alert for several regions including Idukki, Thrissur, and Kozhikode.
The situation in Wayanad remains critical as rescue operations continue. The use of drone-based radar and extensive support from national and international teams are crucial in the ongoing efforts to find survivors and provide relief to those affected by the landslides.
