Massive Landslides Hit Wayanad: 24 Dead, Hundreds Trapped
Wayanad, Kerala – On Tuesday morning, catastrophic landslides struck the hilly regions near Meppadi in Wayanad district, Kerala. At least 24 people have been confirmed dead, and hundreds are feared trapped. The disaster unfolded amid heavy rainfall that intensified the crisis.
Rescue Operations Underway
The Indian Army, along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), has been deployed to tackle the emergency. The Indian Army has dispatched 225 personnel, including medical teams, to assist in the rescue operations. Additionally, two Air Force helicopters—a Mi-17 and an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH)—are assisting in the air rescue missions.
Kerala’s Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Veena George, announced that the Indian Navy will also join the rescue efforts. She confirmed that a crucial bridge to the Nilambur region in Malappuram has been washed away. “Around 70 people are also injured. We have ensured proper treatment for the injured,” George added.
Prime Minister Modi’s Support
In response to the calamity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured all possible support from the Central government. A compensation package of Rs 2 lakh has been announced for the families of the deceased. Those injured will receive Rs 50,000. The Prime Minister has communicated with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to ensure coordinated efforts in managing the crisis.
Destruction and Challenges
The landslides have caused widespread devastation. Videos shared on social media depict scenes of uprooted trees, destroyed homes, and vehicles washed away in floodwaters. Rescue operations have faced significant hurdles due to continuous rainfall and blocked paths from massive boulders.
Chief Minister Vijayan has emphasized that all possible measures are being taken to coordinate rescue operations. A control room has been established, and emergency helpline numbers 9656938689 and 8086010833 have been issued for public assistance.
Political and Community Response
Former Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic event. In a statement on X, he assured that he had spoken with local authorities to ensure that rescue operations were effective and well-coordinated. Gandhi urged all UDF workers to support the administration in relief efforts and to provide any necessary assistance.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the northern districts of Kerala, including Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Malappuram. Heavy rain is expected to continue, prompting the IMD to advise extreme caution for both locals and tourists.
