106 Dead in Wayanad Landslides, Hundreds Feared Trapped
Kerala’s Wayanad district has been devastated by massive landslides, resulting in at least 106 deaths and hundreds feared trapped. The landslides struck the hilly areas near Meppadi on Tuesday morning amidst severe rainfall.
Extent of the Disaster
The landslides have caused significant destruction in Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha villages. The intense downpour led to three major landslides occurring within a span of four hours, causing extensive damage. Many individuals are feared to have been swept away in the Chaliyar river, and a bridge connecting the affected areas to Chooralmala has been washed out.
Rescue Operations
In response to the disaster, the Indian Army has deployed 225 personnel, including medical teams, to assist in the rescue operations. Two Air Force helicopters, a Mi-17 and an ALH (Advanced Light Helicopter), are actively engaged in the rescue efforts. A control centre has been established in Calicut under the Para Regiment for effective coordination.
Kerala Minister Veena George has announced that a team from the Indian Navy will also join the rescue operations. Additionally, a control room has been set up to manage relief efforts, with helplines 9656938689 and 8086010833 available for emergency assistance.
Government Response
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan described the situation as a “heart-wrenching disaster,” declaring a state mourning for two days. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured full support from the Centre, including a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of those killed and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
Rahul Gandhi’s Condolences
Former Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi expressed his profound anguish over the tragedy, pledging to coordinate with the Union Ministers and offer any necessary assistance for the relief operations. He also urged UDF workers to support the administration in the ongoing rescue efforts.
Red Alert Issued
The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall in several districts, including Wayanad. Locals and tourists have been advised to exercise extreme caution.
