Vinesh Phogat Calls Sedition on Critics, Accuses Them of Disrespecting Nation
Vinesh Phogat, the celebrated wrestler-turned-politician, made a bold statement against her critics, accusing those who were happy over her Olympic loss of disrespecting the nation. Speaking at her first political rally in Julana, Haryana, Phogat declared that such people should be tried for sedition, sparking a new controversy.
Joining Congress and Political Aspirations
On August 6, Vinesh Phogat officially joined the Congress Party and was named the candidate for the Julana constituency in the upcoming Haryana Assembly election. This move marks her formal entry into politics, a decision she states was driven by her desire to serve the nation beyond her achievements in wrestling.
Criticism and Response to Brij Bhushan Singh
Phogat’s strong statements came in response to comments made by former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who had previously accused her of cheating and suggested that her failure to win an Olympic medal was because “God punished her.” Phogat was visibly upset by Singh’s remarks and stated that those celebrating her loss had not just disrespected her, but the entire nation. “The medal I lost was not mine alone; it was the nation’s. To celebrate my loss is to dishonor the country,” Phogat asserted.
Olympic Journey and Setback
In the recent Paris Olympics, Vinesh Phogat made history as the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the finals. However, her Olympic dreams were cut short when she was disqualified for being overweight by just 100 grams in her 50-kilogram category. The incident sparked widespread debate and criticism, with Phogat defending herself against what she describes as a politically motivated narrative aimed at discrediting her.
Allegations Against BJP Leaders
Phogat did not hold back on criticizing BJP leaders who, she claimed, have been consistently making disparaging remarks against her for the past 1.5 years. She pointed out that no BJP leader, including the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, attended her welcome event after the Olympics. Instead, they limited their support to social media posts and monetary claims, which Phogat believes were merely vote-seeking tactics.
Gratitude to Congress Leaders
Expressing gratitude to Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge, Phogat thanked them for their unwavering support during her difficult times. She credited the Congress Party for standing by her and the other protesting wrestlers when no one else did.
The Fight Continues
Phogat reaffirmed her commitment to continue the fight against exploitation in sports, particularly for women athletes. She emphasized that the legal battle against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who has been accused of sexual harassment, is far from over. “This is not just my fight; it’s for every woman who has faced injustice,” Phogat declared.
Future Plans and Election Promises
Vinesh Phogat has promised to focus on sports infrastructure, women’s safety, and overall development in Julana if elected. She aims to build a sports stadium and create a safe environment for all. As she steps into her new role as a politician, Phogat remains steadfast in her resolve to advocate for the rights of athletes and bring about meaningful change.
