The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has released a comprehensive verdict regarding Vinesh Phogat’s appeal against her disqualification at the Paris Olympics 2024. Vinesh, one of India’s leading wrestlers, was disqualified from the 50 kg category for exceeding the weight limit during the final weigh-in. Her appeal, which sought a joint-silver medal, was ultimately dismissed by CAS, as detailed in the 24-page verdict published on August 19.
Vinesh Phogat’s Olympic journey faced a significant setback when she was disqualified after failing the second weigh-in. Although she successfully cleared the first weigh-in and progressed to the final, the second weigh-in saw her weight exceed the 50 kg limit, leading to her disqualification and last-place ranking. Phogat argued that the slight excess in weight was due to natural factors like the menstrual cycle and water retention. However, CAS emphasized that the rules regarding the weight limit are strict and apply equally to all participants without any tolerance for exceptions.
The CAS verdict stated that the rules do not allow any discretion for weight variations, even for factors like the singlet’s weight. The arbitrator ruled that since Vinesh failed the second weigh-in, she was ineligible to compete in the final and, as a result, lost her eligibility for a silver medal. The verdict also noted that the rules are designed to ensure that athletes remain eligible throughout the competition, from the initial entry to the finals.
Vinesh’s appeal sought to challenge the consequences outlined in Article 11 of the United World Wrestling (UWW) rules, arguing for a tolerance that would accommodate her situation. However, the CAS ruling confirmed that there was no basis for such accommodation, and the decision to disqualify her was upheld.
The CAS decision has left Vinesh uncertain about her future in wrestling, as she has since returned to India without a clear path forward. This case highlights the strict enforcement of Olympic regulations and the challenges athletes face in maintaining eligibility throughout high-stakes competitions.
