Aakhir Tak – In Depth:
Vasundhara Oswal, the 26-year-old daughter of Indian billionaire Pankaj Oswal, has been detained by Ugandan authorities on charges related to economic and criminal offenses. The controversy began when 20 armed men allegedly seized her from the family’s extra neutral alcohol (ENA) plant. According to local officials, her arrest is connected to an investigation into a missing person, a claim the Oswal family denies, stating that the charges are based on false accusations by a former employee. This employee reportedly stole valuable assets and secured a $200,000 loan for which the Oswal family acted as guarantors.
Vasundhara has also been tied to allegations involving the kidnapping and murder of a missing chef, as well as fraudulent activities connected to a cryptocurrency scheme. Her family insists that these claims are untrue, yet investigations continue.
Born in 1999, Vasundhara earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from a Swiss university and is currently the Executive Director of Pro Industries, Africa’s largest ethanol producer. She received the Global Youth Icon Award in 2023 and was named Woman of the Year by the Economic Times.
Concerns over her detention have intensified as several colleagues, including the company’s lawyer, were also arrested. Her family posted on social media, revealing that Vasundhara was being held under harsh conditions without proper hygiene facilities. Pankaj Oswal has approached the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) to demand immediate action.
